The road to application

This is for those who do not get Medicare automatically. For those who already receive Social Security, Railroad Retirement Board, or disability benefits, there’s no application needed.

But that goes without saying – if you fall into one of these groups who are automatically enrolled, knowing that you are automatically enrolled will save you time and effort.

The best time is now

There’s no time like the present when signing up for Medicare. If you’re just turning 65, you have three months before to three months after the month you turn 65 (a 7-month time frame). This is the absolute best time, because if you’ve worked at least 40 tax quarters in the U.S., you can get inpatient medical coverage (Part A) with a $0 per month premium. This is the one time when late fees don’t apply to you.

If you have missed this window, sooner is still better. The General Enrollment Period lasts from January 1 to March 31, with your coverage starting July 1.

You may drive to your local Social Security office, only to find that it’s not open at all.
