Dental Vision & Hearing
Dental, Vision, and Hearing
Dental, vision, and hearing are excluded from Original Medicare’s list of covered treatments. This can be devastating to those who are otherwise satisfied with their Medicare policy, and are hesitant to take on extra costs to obtain coverage for these services. Fortunately, there are inexpensive options available to you.

Getting dental, vision, and hearing & Original Medicare
One of Original Medicare’s downsides is the lack of dental, vision, and hearing coverage. This can be enough to dissuade an individual from joining if his or her most serious medical needs are related to dental, vision, and/or hearing.
So, you won’t be able to get discounted treatments with Original Medicare alone. But here are a few ways in which you can have Original Medicare and get dental, vision, and hearing treatments at lower costs:
- If you meet your state’s standards to be classified as low-income, you can get Medicaid. You can have both of these programs. Medicaid helps here, because it can offer dental, vision, and hearing coverage
- You have employer health insurance coverage, either from your own employment or your spouse’s
- You can also add separate insurance plans. Be careful with this though – check to see if the plan you’re interested in allows you to have Medicare and that insurance plan at the same time
Medicare Advantage
Medicare Advantage is legally required to offer all of the benefits you get with Original Medicare, plus extra coverage for other types of treatments. However, there is a catch – you are limited to a network. Only certain doctors in your area will take your insurance.
While the concept of a smaller network may make Medicare Advantage sound like a bad idea, it’s also important to see it from this perspective – if you had the choice as to where you would get dental, vision, or hearing treatment, where would you go? Chances are, you want to see professionals in your area and not have to drive to another town to get dental, vision, or hearing services. That’s why Medicare Advantage’s provider network isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It’s the only form of Medicare that enables you to get these treatments at a reduced cost. Also, some Medicare Advantage plans such as Private Fee-for-Service and Preferred Provider Organization allow for you to get treatment out-of-network for a higher cost. While you wouldn’t be getting the lowest price possible, you would not have to pay everything out-of-pocket either.
