Moving to a new area may require you to make changes to your Medicare coverage. However, it depends on the type of policy you have and the location you’ll be moving to. In any case, you’ll be able to make necessary changes easily so that you can continue to enjoy your Medicare coverage.
What Form Of Medicare Coverage Will Follow Me?
Medicare is divided into Parts A, B, C, and D. Medicare Part A and Part B are together known as Original Medicare, and are the only two Parts not limited to a coverage network.
Original Medicare is accepted nationwide, meaning that if you have an Original Medicare policy, you’ll be able to go to any facility or healthcare provider who accepts it and get coverage for your treatments.
What If I Have Medicare Advantage Or A Medicare Drug Plan?
Medicare Advantage (Part C) and Part D typically have coverage networks, which cover treatments and services from certain healthcare providers within a network area. If you move out-of-network, you’ll have to get a new policy.
Moving initiates a Special Enrollment Period, in which you can enroll in a new Medicare Advantage or Part D policy without a coverage gap. You’ll have from two months before you move to two months after you move to join a new policy.
Will My Medigap Plan Be Affected?
One of Medigap’s biggest strengths is that it gives you coverage wherever your Original Medicare coverage applies. However, moving to a different state may require you to switch to a new Medigap policy.
If you move to Minnesota, Wisconsin, or Massachusetts, you will need to change Medigap policies, since Medigap operates differently in these states.
What Is The Guaranteed Right To Medigap?
If you have Medicare Advantage or Medicare SELECT, you can join Medigap outside of the standard six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period that starts when you initially enroll in Medicare.
When you move, you can switch back to Original Medicare and have a guaranteed right to join Medigap Plans A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, and N. However, those who turned 65 after January 1, 2020 will not be able to get C or F.
If you’re switching from Medicare Advantage, your guaranteed right to Medigap starts two months before coverage ends to 63 days after.
