What to compare

Medicare Supplements can be compared by what they cover, the unique costs and features offered, and who the Medicare Supplement plan is most suitable for.

What Supplement Plans cover

Medicare Supplements offer coverage according to a list of possible out-of-pocket costs.

The costs a Medicare Supplement can cover are:

  • Part A hospital costs and coinsurance
  • Part A hospice coinsurance or copayment
  • Part A Skilled Nursing Facility coinsurance
  • Part A deductible
  • Part B deductible
  • Part B excess charges
  • Part B coinsurance or copay
  • First three pints of blood
  • Emergency costs when having a medical emergency in a foreign country

Ranking coverage

Medicare Supplement plans can be broken down into groups, many are similar to one another. This will be analyzed by looking at:

  • Plans A and B
  • Plans C, D, F, and G
  • Plans K and L
  • Plans M and N
Plans A and B

Medicare Supplement Plans A and B offer the simplest level of coverage.

Plan A covers:

  • Part A hospital coinsurance and hospital costs
  • Part A hospice coinsurance or copayment
  • Part B coinsurance or copayment
  • First three pints of blood

Plan B covers:

  • Everything that Plan A does, plus the Medicare Part A deductible

For someone wanting the simplest, low-cost plan, this is worth considering. The choice between the two depends on how much a person values Part A deductible coverage.

Plans C, D, F, and G

These Medicare Supplement plans have the most coverage out of all Medicare Supplements. The coverage is so extensive, it’s best to compare them by what they don’t cover. It should also be noted that all of them cover foreign travel, but at 80%.

Plan C:

  • Everything except for Part B excess charges

Plan D:

  • Everything except for Part B deductible and Part B excess charges

Plan F:

  • Covers everything

Plan G:

  • Everything except for Part B deductible

For someone who is new, Supplement Plans C and F are not available, because Medicare Supplements are no longer allowed to cover Part B deductibles.

Plans K and L

These plans cover the same costs, except at different percentages. Both over 100% coverage for Part A hospital coinsurance and other hospital costs.

For these, expense types, Plan K covers 50% while L covers 75%:

  • Part A deductible
  • Part B coinsurance or copayment
  • First three pints of blood
  • Part A hospice coinsurance or copayment
  • Part A skilled nursing facility coinsurance

The deciding factor here is the percentage you prefer to reduce your costs by.

Plans M and N

Both Plans M and N cover all costs except for the Part B deductible and excess charges.

The difference is that Plan M covers just 50% of the Part A deductible, while Plan N covers 100% of the Part A deductible and it may also leave the policyholder to make up to a $20 copayment for Part B office visits and up to $50 for Part B emergency room visits.
