Medicare is one of the most highly sought-after health insurance policies around. But it’s not available to just anyone – only certain individuals can get it. Before looking into enrolling in Medicare, here are some things you ought to know about Medicare eligibility beforehand.
You Can Be Under 65 And Still Get Medicare
Many individuals have to meet an age requirement of being 65 or older to become eligible for Medicare coverage, but Medicare does make special exceptions for those with disabilities and certain medical conditions.
If you’re younger than 65 but have received disability benefits for at least 24 months, you are eligible for Medicare. If you’ve been diagnosed with ALS, you can get Medicare during the first month you become eligible for Social Security, Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) disability cash benefits.
Those with ESRD who get frequent dialysis treatments (or have a kidney transplant) are also eligible.
You May Be Eligible For Premium-Free Part A
Part A is the inpatient coverage, which covers your costs when you are admitted to a hospital or other inpatient facility. For those who don’t qualify for the premium-free version, the premium can be up to $499 per month.
If you’re at least 65 years old and have worked in the U.S. for 40 tax quarters or more, receive Social Security or RRB benefits, get disability benefits, or are eligible for those benefits, then you can get Part A premium-free.
However, suppose you’re only eligible due to being 65 or older. In that case, it is encouraged that you join Medicare within the Initial Enrollment Period. This starts three months before your 65th birthday and ends three months after you turn 65. If you wait past this time, you won’t be able to get premium-free Part A.
Your Spouse Can Help You Become Eligible For More Benefits
The requirement of working a minimum of 40 tax quarters as a U.S. employee to get premium-free Part A doesn’t necessarily have to be from your employment. You can also enjoy this benefit if your spouse has worked 40 tax quarters or if your spouse has worked for a government employer covered by Medicare. The same is true if you are eligible for Medicare due to having ESRD.
